Mustieles Spanish champion before Areitio and Comas

Abel Mustieles won last Saturday his first Spanish champion title after having dominated the finals in Huetor Vega at Grenade. Ion Areitio and Dani Comas completed the podium.

It was with a comfortable lead the global number 1 won his first national title. Dani Comas who was his biggest challenger with Benito Ros absent because of an injury, unfortunate crashed during warmup. The great Catalan rider had a lot of issues finishing sections and ended up 3rd on the podium. Ion Areitio became second after tasting the podium in the last Worldcup event. He has got great talent and his recent performances give hope to see a lot more of him.

Here is a reaction from Abel in his new champion jersey: “I am very happy to just have won the championshipJe suis très très satisfait de remporter un championnat that eluded me so far. I am very happy with my third round where I only had 2 penalty points, a tour where I had a lot of fun. Now I am going to focus on the European championship.”  This Thursday Abel leaves from Barcelona to travel to Bern in Switzerland to participate in the European UCI Trials Championship. He will defend his title from last year in Germany. “It is one of my objectives for this year and arrives just in time.”

For Ion Areitio it was a very good result, whom normally is the 4th ranked rider in the Iberian hierarchy. “c’est un résulat très satisfaisant, lui qui est en principe le numéro 4 dans la hiérarchie Ibérique. “”I finished a hard days work in second place at the Spanish championship” commented Ion.

For Dani Comas it was a bit more complicated. “It was not a good day for me, a big crash before starting the finals Cela n’a pas été un bon jour, une mauvaise chute avant de débuter la finale, has forced me to ride a painful trials, I have not been able to give the best of myself.”

Pol Tarres finished 4th followed by Rafa Tibau.
